Family Reunification: Bringing Your Family to Ukraine as a Foreign Worker

Published: September 13, 2026Updated: September 13, 2026Author: ASHA Ukraine

When you can bring your family over

A foreign worker legally residing in Ukraine on a residence permit usually gains the right to apply for family reunification — bringing a spouse and minor children into the country on a legal basis. The key condition is the stability of the worker's own status: they need a valid residence permit and, typically, proof that they can provide family members with housing and means of support inside Ukraine.

Who counts as a "family member"

Most often, this covers a spouse and minor children of the applicant. Parents, adult children, or other relatives fall under this category less often and usually need additional justification — so before starting the process, it's worth confirming that a specific relative actually meets the criteria for family reunification rather than some other entry basis.

What documents are needed

The basic package includes family members' foreign passports, documents proving the family relationship (a marriage certificate, children's birth certificates), proof of the applicant's own legal status in Ukraine, and proof of housing. Documents issued abroad usually need legalization or an apostille plus a notarized Ukrainian translation — this is one of the steps that most extends the timeline when documents aren't prepared in advance.

The typical sequence of steps

Family members first enter Ukraine on a standard basis (visa or visa-free, depending on citizenship), after which an application for a residence permit is filed on the basis of family reunification. Alongside the formal paperwork, it's worth thinking ahead about practical matters — housing, health insurance, and for school-age children, enrollment in a school.

The most common causes of delay

Names spelled differently across documents from different countries, a missing apostille on a document that requires one, or an expired certificate are the most common reasons a family reunification application takes longer than the standard timeline. All of these are easy to avoid by checking the full document package before filing.

Simplifying the family reunification process

Family reunification runs through several sequential stages, each with its own document and timeline requirements — skipping or mishandling one means restarting that part of the process. Migration and HR support from ASHA Ukraine guides a worker through the entire process, from document verification to filing the residence permit application for family members.
