What a type D visa is and how it differs from a regular visa

A type D visa is a long-term national visa that allows entry into Ukraine for a purpose requiring an extended stay — employment, study, family reunification, and similar. Unlike the short-stay type C visa (tourism, business trips up to 90 days), a type D visa is the first step toward legalization: it opens the way to applying for a work permit and a residence permit once you're already in Ukraine.

A type D visa is normally obtained before departure, at a Ukrainian consulate in the candidate's country of residence.

Who needs a type D visa for employment

A type D visa for employment is needed by citizens of countries that require a visa to enter Ukraine, when the purpose of travel is long-term work for a Ukrainian employer. Visa processing usually runs in parallel with, or right after, securing the same candidate's work permit — see Work Permit: consulates generally want to see proof of employment intent and an invitation from the employer.

What documents are needed

A typical package includes the passport, an invitation or confirmation from the employer, education and qualification documents, and whatever else the specific consulate requests — the exact list can vary by country of application. We prepare the package to match the requirements of the specific embassy, to avoid delays from formal shortcomings.

A note on the entry route

Civilian air traffic over Ukraine has been closed since 2022, so foreign workers generally enter the country by land, via neighbouring states. For many candidates, the nearest option is flying into Chișinău (Moldova) and then crossing the Moldova–Ukraine border; in some cases this additionally requires a Moldovan transit visa — see Moldova Transit e-Visa. We plan the route together with the candidate in advance, so the visa, any transit documents, and the entry date all line up.

Processing timelines

How long a type D visa application takes depends on the specific consulate and how busy it is at the time of filing. We give the candidate individual timeline estimates and stay in touch at every stage — from filing through to the visa being stamped in the passport.

What comes next, after entering Ukraine

A type D visa on its own doesn't grant the right to work — it's an entry document and the start of the legalization process. After entry, the next steps are finalizing the work permit (if not already done) and obtaining a Temporary Residence Card (TRC). We support the candidate through each of these stages — from visa to the first day of work — see How to Get a Residence Permit in Ukraine — Step by Step.
